Dental Implants

Implants can be a great option for those that are missing a tooth! Typically a more expensive option for replacing missing teeth because of its difficulty, it is also the most convenient and long-lasting option. Patients are able to treat their tooth just like their regular teeth, brushing and flossing, but the implant will never decay. Patients and the people they interact with will not even notice its presence!

A few things to know if you're thinking about dental implants:
  • Young adults are not eligible for dental implants until they have reached their full growth. This is typically around 17-18 years of age, but can vary depending on each individual. While growing, there are other options to replace a missing tooth temporarily, and often, younger patients will need an orthodontist to create appropriate space.
  • Health concerns such as smoking and diabetes make implant integration more difficult for your body. Healing in the oral cavity will depend on how many packs/day you smoke, how well your blood sugar is controlled, and if this surgical technique is for you.
  • Planning is essential to ensure correct placement and optimal results. You may need to have several consultations and take 2-3 different types of radiographs in preparation for the surgery. We may refer you to a specific specialist on our team to create space, prepare the site, or place the implant.
  • Dental implants are not usually an instant fix! Once the dental implant is placed, in most cases, it is covered for 3-6 months to allow your bone to integrate with the titanium. Then, to prepare the tissue for esthetic purposes, the implant is uncovered and the tissue allowed to heal for about a month. At that point, an impression is made for a final restoration. While your implant is integrating into your bone, there are options available to provide for a missing front tooth.
  • The potential implant site may need augmentation for placement of an implant. The implant will not become part of your bone if there is not enough bone!
  • Maintenance is key! Regular check ups and cleanings are vital to caring for your dental implant and natural teeth.
  • Every case is different, because YOU are the only you!
